LEWTAS FAMILIES in  FRECKLETON & KIRKHAM

The parish of Kirkham was one of the largest in Lancashire and included many small communities between Poulton and Preston - Wharles, Treales, Clifton, Newton and the village of Freckleton. When roads were in terrible condition and travelling was difficult people would go to the church which was nearest to their homes. Baptisms, marriages and burials for members of the same family could therefore take place in one of several local parish churches. However the only church in the area was St Michael's parish church in Kirkham itself. Freckleton parish church was not built until 1836.

Some of the earliest records of Lewtas in the Fylde comes in the registers of Kirkham as this was the parish which covered a large area of the mid Fylde including Goosnargh where the earliest records are from. The parish registers between 1769 - 1803 record John & Susannah of Newton, Richard & Mary and Robert & Emery of Freckleton, David & Mary of Clifton, John & Dorothy of Salwick, David & Margaret of Treales, Matthew & Margaret of Kirkham The list illustrates the wide range of the parish of Kirkham; families appearing in St Michael's registers did not necessarily live in the town itself.

FRECKLETON
From the mid 18th century onwards industry such as manufacturing of cotton and linen goods co-existed with traditional farming and the small port of Freckleton served as a centre for the distribution of coal throughout the district. Peter Shakeshaft has written a history of Freckleton - and has provided material on the town for the
